On February 22nd, the Li Xinsha Bridge in Wanqian Sha Town, Nansha District, Guangzhou, was struck by a vessel. According to CCTV News, the accident was caused by improper operation by the crew, resulting in the left side of the “Lianghui 688” vessel touching Pier 18# of the Li Xinsha Bridge and subsequently the bow touching Pier 19#, causing the bridge deck on the navigation hole to fracture.

The accident has resulted in casualties, and in the face of such devastating consequences, bridge safety once again sounds the alarm for prevention.

In addition to effective management in ship, bridge, and waterway traffic, introducing intelligent and automated monitoring and warning technologies is a necessary measure to consolidate the achievements in collision prevention.

LSLiDAR Smart Shipping System Solution is a comprehensive solution developed by LSLiDAR specifically for bridge collision prevention and ship monitoring. The solution utilizes long-range LiDAR as the main detection device, capable of real-time and high-speed scanning and detection, providing parameters such as distance, length, width, height dimensions, vessel speed, and vessel profile model with high precision, enabling timely hazard warnings. With strong anti-interference capabilities and excellent rain, fog, and dust filtering functions, the system can work stably around the clock, safeguarding bridge safety.

The main components of the solution include three major functional systems: Ultra High-Warning System, Ship Yaw and Overspeed Monitoring System, and Ship Monitoring System.

  • Yaw and Overspeed Warning System:

Using LSLiDAR’s self-developed 1550nm long-range LiDAR, with a detection range of 2 kilometers, it performs a 120° ultra-wide range real-time scanning of vessels in the navigational channel, monitors their navigation trajectory, and provides timely warning information for navigating vessels. The warning range for navigational channels and vessel speeds can be designed with multi-level step settings. When a vessel deviates from the channel or exceeds the speed limit, the system issues an alarm signal. Different alarm mechanisms can be set based on different distances, reminding the crew to adjust the course promptly to avoid navigation errors and collisions.

  • Ultra High-Warning System:

This system adopts LSLiDAR’s self-developed high-end long-range single-point ranging system, LS30MVA, with a detection range of up to 2 kilometers. The system integrates LiDAR ranging machine, angular displacement platform, and cameras, setting the installation height of the system at the height limit of the bridge. The ranging system conducts cross-checking detection on passing vessels, identifying whether the height of the vessels exceeds the pre-set ultra-high threshold. It performs ultra-high monitoring and warning for vessels in navigable waterways and links the cameras to capture video evidence of the vessels.

  • Ship Monitoring System:

The system installs two LiDARs on either side of the lock or waterway. When a vessel enters the detection area of the LiDAR, the LiDARs on both sides can obtain the point cloud information of the vessel’s left and right sides, respectively. After the vessel completely passes through the detection area, the system calculates the vessel’s length, width, and height based on the continuously acquired cross-sectional information.

In addition to providing the above system solutions, LSLiDAR offers multiple LiDAR options as standalone hardware for bridge collision prevention, which possess the following features:

  • Long-range detection, up to 2 kilometers
  • 120°Detection range of 120°
  • High precision with small measurement errors
  • Excellent rain, fog, and dust filtering function, suitable for extreme weather conditions
  • Strong resistance to strong light interference, available 24/7

Currently, LSLiDAR has implemented applications in over 26 bridges in Guangzhou, Foshan, Guangxi, Jiangmen, and other areas, providing intelligent protection for bridge safety.
